Google Chrome – Troubleshooting Slow Performance

Modified on Sat, 24 Oct at 2:21 PM

If Google Chrome or your PBSD Chromebook is running slowly, freezing, or having difficulty during Google Meet sessions, the following troubleshooting steps may help improve performance.

Before You Begin

Save any open work before closing tabs, restarting Chrome, or restarting your Chromebook.

These instructions are intended for PBSD-managed Chromebooks. Some settings may be controlled by the district and may not be available for students or staff to change.

Step 1: Close Unnecessary Browser Tabs

Having many browser tabs open at the same time can use additional memory and processing resources.

  1. Review the tabs currently open in Google Chrome.
  2. Save any work you need to keep.
  3. Close tabs that you are no longer using.
  4. Keep only the tabs needed for your current assignment or activity.
Helpful Tip

During Google Meet sessions, close unnecessary websites and applications to help reduce the amount of memory and processing power being used.

Step 2: Restart Your Chromebook

Restarting your Chromebook can help resolve temporary performance problems and close processes that are no longer needed.

  1. Save your work and close open applications.
  2. Select the time in the bottom-right corner of your Chromebook.
  3. Select the Power option to shut down your device.
  4. Wait a few seconds, then turn your Chromebook back on.
  5. Sign in and check whether performance has improved.

Step 3: Check for ChromeOS Updates

Keeping ChromeOS updated can help improve stability, security, and compatibility with district applications.

  1. Connect your Chromebook to the internet.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select About ChromeOS.
  4. Select Check for updates, if available.
  5. Follow any on-screen instructions and restart if prompted.

For additional information, visit  Google's Chromebook Update Instructions .

Step 4: Check Chrome Task Manager

Chrome includes a Task Manager that can help identify browser tabs or processes using large amounts of memory or CPU resources.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Press Search + Esc on your Chromebook keyboard, or open Chrome's menu and look for Task Manager under additional tools.
  3. Review the listed tasks and their memory or CPU usage.
  4. Close unnecessary browser tabs associated with high usage.
Important: District-Managed Devices

Do not disable district-installed extensions, reset managed browser settings, or end unfamiliar system processes without instructions from PBSD Technology Support. These components may be required for security, filtering, or instructional applications.

Step 5: Clear Browser Cache if Needed

If a particular website is slow, not loading correctly, or displaying outdated information, clearing cached files may help.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
  3. Open Delete browsing data from the Chrome menu or Settings.
  4. Select Cached images and files.
  5. Choose an appropriate time range.
  6. Select Delete data.
  7. Reopen the website and check whether the issue is resolved.
Helpful Tip

Clearing cookies may sign you out of websites. Start by clearing cached images and files rather than removing all browsing data.

For more information, see  Google's Instructions for Clearing Cache and Cookies .
