Keeping Google Chrome up to date helps maintain browser security, performance, and compatibility with district applications and websites.
This guide explains how to check for Chrome updates, install available updates, and restart the browser when necessary.
Google Chrome may update automatically on district-managed devices. Some update options may be controlled by the PBSD Technology Department. The instructions below are primarily for Chrome on MacBooks and Windows computers. Chromebook operating system updates are managed separately.
1. Check for Google Chrome Updates
- Open Google Chrome on your computer.
- Click the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner of the Chrome window.
- Select Help.
- Click About Google Chrome.
- Chrome will automatically check for available browser updates.
- If an update is available, allow Chrome to download and install it.
- Click Relaunch if prompted to complete the update.
Before restarting Chrome, save any work in progress. Although Chrome typically restores open tabs, some websites, forms, or applications may not preserve unsaved information.
2. Follow the Step-by-Step Visual Guide
PBSD also provides a visual walkthrough showing how to check for Google Chrome updates.
Follow the illustrated Scribe instructions for updating and securing your Chrome browser.
View Step-by-Step Scribe Guide →3. Confirm Chrome Is Up to Date
After Chrome finishes checking for updates, return to Help > About Google Chrome.
If Chrome reports that it is up to date, no additional browser update is needed at that time.
If Chrome requests another relaunch, save your work and restart the browser to complete the update.
4. Troubleshooting Common Update Issues
Chrome Does Not Find Any Updates
If Chrome indicates that it is already up to date, no further action is necessary.
Chrome Cannot Complete an Update
- Confirm that your computer is connected to the internet.
- Save your work and close Chrome.
- Reopen Chrome and return to the About Google Chrome page.
- If the update continues to fail, contact Technology Support.
Chrome Updates Are Managed by Your Organization
Some district-owned computers and Chromebooks receive updates automatically through district management systems.
If Chrome indicates that updates are managed by your organization, or the update option is unavailable, contact PBSD Technology Support if you believe an update is needed.
Do not attempt to bypass district management settings, install unauthorized browser versions, or modify device security settings to force an update.
5. Why Browser Updates Matter
Keeping Chrome updated helps:
- Protect against known browser security vulnerabilities.
- Improve browser stability and performance.
- Maintain compatibility with district educational applications.
- Resolve issues addressed in newer browser releases.
6. Need Help?
If you experience problems updating Google Chrome, accessing district applications, or using your browser, contact the Technology Department.
Please include your device type, school or building, and a brief description of the issue.
